AMEA Power has signed two landmark Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Egypt to develop the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Africa and Egypt’s first utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS).

The projects represent a key step forward in Egypt’s renewable energy strategy, aimed at bolstering energy security and advancing the nation’s clean energy targets.

The flagship project involves the construction of a 1,000MW solar PV power plant, coupled with a 600MWh BESS, in Benban, Aswan Governorate.

This development will become Africa’s largest solar PV installation and a groundbreaking step for renewable energy in the region.

Additionally, a 300MWh BESS will be integrated into AMEA Power’s existing 500MW Abydos Solar PV Project in Kom Ombo, Aswan, making it Egypt’s first-ever utility-scale battery storage solution.

Together, theprojects represent an investment of approximately $800 million and are expected to generate 2,500 jobs during peak construction, while providing clean energy to around 770,000 homes.

The projects will also offset over 2.3 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, significantly contributing to Egypt’s efforts to combat climate change.

The agreements were formalised during a signing ceremony on Thursday, attended by Egypt’s Prime Minister, H.E. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, alongside key figures including the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, and the UAE Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Mariam Al Kaabi. AMEA Power’s leadership, including Chairman Hussain Al Nowais, was also present.

AMEA Power’s Chairman, Hussain Al Nowais, highlighhted the company’s commitment to Egypt’s renewable energy transition: “As the developer of the largest solar PV project in Africa and the first to implement BESS in Egypt, we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the region’s energy sector. These projects are more than just power generators – they are engines of economic growth, job creation, and community development.”

This latest move by AMEA Power reinforces Egypt’s role as a key player in Africa’s energy landscape. The country has been grappling with power outages recently, and these new projects will help stabilise energy supply while aligning with Egypt’s strategy to generate 42% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035.

By increasing the capacity of clean energy and enhancing grid reliability through BESS, Egypt is taking bold steps toward a more sustainable energy future.

AMEA Power’s expanding portfolio in Egypt includes the 500MW Abydos Solar PV project, which is slated for completion by October 2024, and the 500MW Amunet Wind Project, expected to be commissioned by the third quarter of 2025.

These projects, along with the newly announced solar PV and BESS initiatives, reflect the company’s growing footprint in Egypt and beyond.

The strategic location of these projects in Aswan, a region with abundant sunlight, highlights the importance of optimising renewable resources in the country.

AMEA Power’s investment in energy storage technology is particularly crucial, as it will allow for more efficient use of solar energy, ensuring that excess power generated during the day can be stored and used at night or during periods of high demand.

AMEA Power has made it clear that its involvement in Egypt goes beyond energy development. As part of its broader commitment to socio-economic development, the company will work closely with local communities to implement social initiatives through its ‘Community Investment and Development Programs.’

This approach aims to deliver long-term benefits to the region, ensuring that local communities share in the economic and social gains from these projects.

In the context of a global shift toward renewable energy, Egypt’s embrace of solar and wind power is a critical step in reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. The projects represent a key moment for the country, as it seeks to position itself as a renewable energy hub in Africa.

AMEA Power’s investments come at a time when international efforts to combat climate change are accelerating, with Egypt playing a central role, particularly as host of the COP27 climate summit in 2022.

AMEA Power, headquartered in Dubai, is rapidly expanding its portfolio across Africa, the Middle East, and emerging Asia, with over 1,600MW of projects in operation or near construction.

The company’s long-term vision aligns with the global energy transition, as it focuses on delivering large-scale renewable energy solutions, including wind, solar, energy storage, and green hydrogen.
