UAE-based TAQA Water Solutions has signed a $544.5 million agreement with Uzbekistan’s New Tashkent City Directorate to develop a major water infrastructure project.
This is the company’s second large-scale investment in the country’s utilities sector.
The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), signed by TAQA Water Solutions CEO Ahmed Al Shamsi and Maksud Abbaskhanov, Deputy Director of the New Tashkent City Directorate, grants TAQA Water Solutions an exclusive period to conduct feasibility studies for a 65-kilometer raw water transmission pipeline and an advanced water treatment plant.
The project is expected to serve around two million residents in New Tashkent City.
Under the agreement, TAQA Water Solutions will undertake technical and financial assessments to determine the project’s viability and propose a bankable model for implementation.
The planned infrastructure will source water from the Charvak Mountain Reservoir and includes a treatment facility equipped with cutting-edge technology to ensure compliance with international drinking water standards.
The pipeline will transport over 500,000 cubic meters of water daily and generate up to 20 megawatts of hydropower to maintain a reliable supply. The initiative aligns with Uzbekistan’s broader strategy to modernize its infrastructure and accommodate the rapid expansion of New Tashkent City.
Al Shamsi said the project builds on TAQA Water Solutions’ role in Uzbekistan’s utilities sector, following its leadership in developing Tashkent’s largest wastewater treatment facility last year.
“This new project will set new benchmarks for sustainable resource management and support the long-term prosperity of New Tashkent City,” he added.
Abbaskhanov emphasized the project’s significance, stating that it would provide a “reliable and sustainable” water supply modeled on the UAE’s best practices. He expressed confidence in the collaboration between TAQA Water Solutions and Uzbek authorities, describing the agreement as a “solid foundation for the next steps.”
