Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced the commissioning of a 30 million imperial gallon (MIG) reservoir in Hatta, part of a project costing about $23.4 million (AED 86 million).
The facility is designed to enhance water storage capacity and reliability in line with Dubai’s growing demand and sustainability goals.
The project includes supporting infrastructure such as the construction of associated buildings and the installation of inlet and outlet pipelines.
It aligns with the Comprehensive Development Plan for Hatta, launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, according to Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“This reservoir supports Dubai’s strategic initiatives to bolster water reserves, ensure sustainable development, and enhance the efficiency and reliability of our water networks,” said Al Tayer.
DEWA has already commissioned two water reservoirs this year in Lusaily and Enkhali and is constructing a 120 MIG reservoir in Hassyan, which will bring Dubai’s total water storage capacity to 1,121 MIG by early 2025.
The authority is also advancing a strategic aquifer storage project capable of holding six billion gallons of water.
The project, which aims to provide over 50 million gallons of desalinated water per day during emergencies, will offer a 90-day supply while maintaining water quality unaffected by external factors.
The latest developments underscore DEWA’s commitment to addressing Dubai’s growing water demands and ensuring long-term resource sustainability.
