Carlo Gavazzi Arabia (CGA) has been awarded a major contract for Mechanical Erection Works at the Zuluf Water Treatment Facility, located 240 kilometers north of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

The contract, granted by Italian EPC contractor Fisia Italimpianti S.p.A., adds to Carlo Gavazzi’s extensive portfolio of mechanical erection activities in the region.

The Zuluf Water Treatment Facility is part of the larger Zuluf Oil Field development, a key component of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan, which aims to diversify the kingdom’s economy and expand its oil and gas infrastructure.

The facility is designed to treat up to 185,000 cubic meters of water per day, an essential process in the production of crude oil at the Zuluf field. The treated water will be reinjected into the offshore oil wells to enhance production capacity.

Work on the mechanical installation began in September 2024, with the successful installation of three degassing vesselsas part of the early phase of the project.

The vessels will play a key role in extracting and compressing gases from the water before it undergoes further treatment and filtration processes.

Last year, a consortium led by Almar Water Solutions secured a key contract from Saudi Aramco to build the water treatment plant at its Zuluf Onshore Oil Facilities project.

Its consortium partners include Saudi-based Al Jomaih Energy and Water Company, a developer of largescale power and water assets; Italy-based Fisia Italimpianti, a part of Webuild Group and a leader in the sustainable design and execution of desalination plants and US-based Aquatech, a global leader in wastewater treatment technology.

According to Almar, the project will be developed under a 25-year Boot (build, own, operate, and transfer) scheme. The scope of work includes design, development, financing, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance, and transfer of ownership.

Fisia Italimpianti, part of the Webuild Group, started construction of the Zuluf Water Treatment Facility earlier this year as part of a broader €408 million ($439 million) contract. The plant will include a water de-gassing system, water treatment and filtration sections, auxiliary systems, and buildings for administrative and technical purposes.

The facility’s advanced design will enable it to clarify and reduce the solids content in the water, making it suitable for reinjection into the oil wells. This process is essential for increasing crude oil production at the Zuluf field, owned by Saudi Aramco.

In addition to the mechanical erection work, Fisia Italimpianti has undertaken several preliminary activities, including engineering design, material procurement, and site preparation to ensure the soil was ready to host the plant’s foundations.

The Zuluf Water Treatment Plant represents a critical infrastructure project that aligns with Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to modernize its oil sector and improve its environmental sustainability practices.

The water treatment plant is designed not only to meet the field’s increasing water injection demands but also to minimize environmental impact by efficiently managing water resources.

This project is part of Fisia Italimpianti’s strategic shift into the oil and gas sector, building on its long-standing expertise in water treatment and desalination plants across the Middle East. The company has a robust presence in the region, having developed large-scale projects in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain, serving over 20 million users with innovative water management solutions.

The Zuluf Water Treatment Facility is part of a broader set of infrastructure projects in Saudi Arabia, where Webuild is deeply involved. These include major undertakings such as 57 km of the Connector high-speed railway line for the Neom development, the Trojena Lake project, and the construction of 42 km of Riyadh’s Line 3 metro system, among others.

As part of this growing portfolio, Douglas OHI KSA also announced its role in the civil works for the Zuluf Water Treatment Facility, contributing to various construction phases including excavation, backfilling, and the creation of critical infrastructure components such as clarifiers and effluent tanks.
