TotalEnergies, EDF secure 1.7GW solar projects in Saudi Arabia

These projects fall under Round 5 of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), which aims to achieve an optimal energy mix by 2030.

TotalEnergies and EDF Renewables have been awarded contracts by Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) to develop 1.7 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy projects.

TotalEnergies, in partnership with Saudi-based Aljomaih Energy and Water Company, will build a 300-megawatt (MW) solar park in Rabigh Industrial City.

Meanwhile, EDF Renewables, alongside China’s State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), will construct two additional solar parks: the 1,000 MW Al Masaa and the 400 MW Al Henakiyah 2.

These projects fall under Round 5 of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), which aims to achieve an optimal energy mix by 2030, equally balancing natural gas and renewables. The program also supports reducing Saudi Arabia’s dependence on liquid fuels for power generation.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, highlighted the significance of the projects, stating, “This new initiative aligns with our strategy to support oil and gas-producing countries in their energy transition while delivering lower-emission energy.” Ibrahim Al Jomaih, Chairman of Aljomaih Energy and Water, added, “This project underscores our commitment to Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative and Vision 2030.”

The agreements include 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) under a build-own-operate (BOO) model, with grid connection anticipated by 2026.

This milestone follows TotalEnergies’ ongoing work in the Kingdom, including the 119 MW Wadi Al Dawasir solar plant, set to begin operations in 2025. Both TotalEnergies and EDF are positioning themselves as key players in Saudi Arabia’s drive to expand renewable energy and reduce its carbon footprint.

The announcements coincide with French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Riyadh, reinforcing the growing collaboration between Saudi Arabia and France in renewable energy.
