Guizhou Engineering Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of POWERCHINA, has secured engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts for two large-scale solar photovoltaic projects in Saudi Arabia, with a combined capacity of 1.75 gigawatts (GW).
The projects, Al Masa’a (MAS) and Al Henakiyah 2 (AHK2), are part of the fifth round of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), led by the Ministry of Energy.
The MAS project, with a capacity of 1,250 megawatts (MW), will be located near Dharghat Town in Hail Province. The AHK2 project, with a capacity of 500 MW, will be developed southeast of Al Henakiyah Town in Medina Province. Collectively, these facilities are expected to generate 4.4 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy per year, enough to power approximately 550,000 homes.
The scope of the projects encompasses the design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and ongoing operation and maintenance of the solar power facilities and their supporting infrastructure.
This is Guizhou Engineering’s first collaboration with key stakeholders, including SPIC Huanghe Hydropower Development Co. Ltd. and EDF Renewables Middle East, as it extends its presence into the Middle East’s renewable energy market.
Upon completion, the projects are anticipated to cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by 2.88 million tonnes, advancing Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 agenda to foster a clean and sustainable energy landscape.
These developments follow the signing of power purchase agreements (PPAs) between the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) and project developers in December 2024, setting the stage for a significant expansion in the kingdom’s renewable energy capacity.
