Mitsubishi Power has completed the Power Station 5 Block 4 gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plant at Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), delivering the project ahead of schedule and reinforcing Bahrain’s industrial expansion and decarbonization efforts.
The plant, powered by Mitsubishi Power’s hydrogen-ready M701JAC gas turbine and steam turbine, has a combined cycle output of 680.9 MW. It is the first deployment of this advanced turbine technology at a Middle Eastern aluminium smelter, supporting Alba’s sustainability goals while ensuring reliable energy supply.
The project was developed by a consortium of Mitsubishi Power and China’s SEPCOIII, aimed at increasing Alba’s captive power generation capacity. The early completion underscores Mitsubishi Power’s track record in delivering high-efficiency energy solutions for heavy industries.
“This landmark project brings cutting-edge power generation technology to the MENA region and strengthens Bahrain’s sustainable energy ambitions,” said Takashi Tozawa, Vice President, Energy Systems at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). “The successful start of commercial operations with our hydrogen-ready M701JAC Gas Turbine highlights our commitment to decarbonizing heavy industry and supporting our customers’ energy goals.”
Alba’s Chairman, Khalid Al Rumaihi, hailed the project as a key step in the company’s green transition. “Power Station 5 Block 4 is more than an expansion—it’s a testament to Alba’s vision for a sustainable future. Delivered ahead of schedule, it demonstrates how innovation and partnerships can drive industrial growth while maintaining environmental responsibility.”
Mitsubishi Power will provide long-term maintenance services for the project under a Long-Term Service Agreement (LTSA), ensuring high availability and efficiency of the gas turbine. The agreement is expected to support Alba’s uninterrupted aluminium production, reinforcing Bahrain’s broader industrial development.
The project aligns with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, which seeks to enhance energy security while advancing carbon reduction initiatives. Mitsubishi Power continues to drive energy transition efforts across the MENA region by integrating hydrogen-ready gas turbines and digital analytics to improve efficiency and resilience in energy-intensive industries.
