Dubai-based renewable energy company AMEA Power has been awarded two landmark projects under South Africa’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) Window 2, organised by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.
The Gainfar and Boitekong projects, both located in the Free State province, will deliver over 300MWh of battery energy storage capacity each.
They aim to address South Africa’s persistent challenges of blackouts and load shedding by enhancing the stability of the country’s electricity grid, managed by Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd.
The Gainfar Project will connect to the Ngwedi substation, while the Boitekong Project will link with the Marang substation. Together, these projects represent a critical step toward strengthening South Africa’s energy infrastructure and advancing its transition to a resilient, sustainable power system.
“These projects demonstrate AMEA Power’s commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions that address immediate grid challenges while contributing to long-term energy security,” the company said in a statement.
This announcement follows AMEA Power’s recent collaboration with Trinasolar and Energy China ZTPC to integrate a 300MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Abydos Solar Power Plant in Aswan, Egypt. Abydos, Egypt’s largest single-site solar PV plant, underscores AMEA Power’s role in driving renewable energy adoption across Africa.
The Gainfar and Boitekong projects add to the momentum of battery storage developments in Africa, such as Norway-based Scatec’s Kenhardt project in South Africa, which combines 540MW of solar capacity with 225MW/1,140MWh of battery storage across three sites.
