The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has announced the allocation of four new sites covering 75 square kilometers in Abu Dhabi for the development of major renewable energy projects.
This includes three solar photovoltaic (PV) plants and a wind farm, collectively aimed at delivering 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of solar PV capacity and 140 megawatts of wind power.
The solar PV plants will be located in Al Faya, Al Khazna, and Al Zarraf, while the wind farm will be sited in Sila. The projects aim to meet EWEC’s targets of 10GW installed solar PV capacity by 2030 and 18GW by 2035, contributing significantly to decarbonizing Abu Dhabi’s energy grid.
“This allocation underscores our commitment to transforming the UAE’s energy sector,” said Othman Al Ali, CEO of EWEC. “These projects will enable us to supply 60% of Abu Dhabi’s power demand from renewable and clean energy sources, setting a global benchmark for sustainable energy systems.”
EWEC secured the sites through partnerships with key Abu Dhabi stakeholders, including the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), and ADNOC, among others.
“This achievement aligns with our regulatory framework, ensuring the development of low-carbon energy solutions to meet our Clean Energy Strategic Targets 2035,” said Eng. Ahmed Mohamed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the DoE.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the EAD, noted that the integration of energy infrastructure with environmental preservation reinforces Abu Dhabi’s Climate Change Strategy.
EWEC’s announcement builds on a year of significant milestones, including the financial close of the 1.5GW Al Ajban Solar PV project and progress on the 1.5GW Khazna and Zarraf solar PV projects.
Once operational, Abu Dhabi will host five of the world’s largest single-site solar power plants, further cementing its position as a global leader in renewable energy innovation.
