AMEA Power has commissioned its 500MW Abydos Solar PV Plant in Egypt’s Aswan Governorate.
The project was completed in18 months and it is set to generate 1,500GWh of clean electricity annually.
It will provide power to approximately 300,000 households and offset over 782,300 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
The project is part of AMEA Power’s growing footprint in Egypt’s renewable energy sector.
Alongside the commissioning of the Abydos Solar PV Plant, the company signed agreements for an additional 500MW wind power project. The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and Land Agreement for the new wind farm were finalized during the ceremony.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior Egyptian government officials, including Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, and Minister of Planning, Economic Development & International Cooperation Dr. Rania Al-Mashat. Also present was AMEA Power Chairman Hussain Al Nowais.
“This achievement reflects the dedication of our team and the strong collaboration with Egyptian authorities and international partners,” said Hussain Al Nowais. “We are proud to contribute to Egypt’s transition to clean energy and sustainable development.”
AMEA Power’s Abydos Solar project was developed in partnership with key international financiers, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Dutch entrepreneurial development bank FMO, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Egypt is leveraging renewable energy projects to meet its target of generating 42% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035 through partnerships with the private sector.
AMEA Power’s projects are expected to play a key role in achieving these goals by offering scalable solutions to support the country’s growing energy demands while mitigating environmental impacts.
The company’s operational and pipeline projects in Egypt include:
- 500MW Amunet Wind Farm: Currently under construction.
- 1,000MW Solar PV Plant: Planned to feature a 600MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
- 500MW Wind Project: New agreements signed for development.
The newly operational Abydos Solar PV Plant will also integrate a 300MWh BESS, enhancing the reliability and flexibility of clean energy supply.
